JSS AWARD

Travel Grant Recipients

Yao-Tai Li, Hong Kong Baptist University (Travel Grant 2019)

It is a great honor to receive the travel grant from JSS and to participate in such a diverse and engaging conference. The other participants presented on a diverse range of topics including education inequality in Sydney and Japan, international students and their role in the Japanese labor market and sex workers in Europe. The theoretical perspectives are sophisticated, the research methodologies were data driven and robust.

I also received constructive feedback on my research primarily asking me to clarify the uniqueness of Airbnb, sampling principles, and coding scheme used to analyze the data collected. I have used these comments in the revision of the paper co-authored with Dr. Mingming Cheng, which titled: “What Do People Say About Airbnb Discrimination? Re- examining Twitter Themes and Online Discussion Networks on Airbnb Discrimination.” During the annual meeting I met and exchanged ideas with other grant recipients and established networks with a few scholars, the intellectual inspirations I acquired from them are certainly beneficial to my career as a junior researcher. I would thereby strongly encourage start-up researchers to apply for this grant and participant in the academic activities and meetings organized by Japan Sociological Society.
