Membership

If you are interested in joining the JSS, please read the JSS Membership Application Guide carefully, fill out the required information on the membership application, and email the application to the JSS Administration Center.

Membership Categories and Dues

Please submit your membership due payment to the following bank account of the JSS Executive Office. When there is a change in membership type (general, graduate student, or associate member), please notify the JSS Administration Center in advance of sending your payment.

JSS has an online system through which overseas members can pay annual membership dues by credit card. Please visit the website below and pay your membership due.

You can use VISA, MasterCard, JCB, or AMEX.

*JSS has a reduced membership due for international members of particular countries, long-term members, and members who do not have full-time employment. For more information, please see Reduced Membership Due for International Members, Reduced Membership Due for Long-term Members, or Reduced Membership Due for Members Who Do Not Have a Full-time Employment.

Changing Registered Member Information / Membership Withdrawal

Membership of the Japan Sociological Society is automatically renewed each April.If you do not wish to renew your membership, please submit your membership withdrawal by each August (the end of the fiscal year). If you wish to withdraw their membership, please contact the JSS Administration Center by e-mail, mail, or fax.

*Please notify the JSS of the “general/graduate student” category in addition to the name of new affiliated organization when changing affiliation information.
*When you wish to publish your changes in affiliation or contact information on the JSS News information, please notify the JSS Administration Center by clearly listing the items you would like to publish.

FAQ

Q: At what time of the year can I join?
A: You can apply for membership at any time of the year. However, it may take a while before your application is officially approved. The Board of Directors will make the decision on membership approval, usually toward the end of March, toward the end of July, and around November. The membership due will be billed, and materials such as journals will be mailed to you, after your membership is approved. You may propose to present your research in a conference and/or submit a paper to JSS journals during the period between filing a membership application and awaiting its approval.

Q: I cannot download the application form. What should I do?
A: If you have any trouble downloading the application form, please contact us via email at jss@sociology.gr.jp.

Q: Membership application requires the recommendation of one or more regular members. How do I apply if I do not know any regular members?
A: If you do not know any regular members for recommendation, please contact us via email at jss@sociology.gr.jp.
