The International Liaison Committee of the Japan Sociological Society (JSS) is pleased to announce its 17th annual grant competition for early-career scholars in its renewed format as JSS Travel Award. JSS will select an overall of 10 scholars to present papers in two special sessions and participate in the JSS annual meeting. The scholars will receive financial support towards their travel costs as follows:
- 6 early-career scholars from outside of Japan (100,000 yen for travel costs)
- 4 early-career scholars from within Japan (20,000 yen for travel costs)

Call for Papers on “Transnationalism in Context of Crises”:
For three decades, sociologists have analyzed social processes accompanying what is generally termed ‘globalization’ from a transnational perspective. This includes research on transnational mobility of human migration in multiple directions, trans-local connections among communities by informational, financial, material, and human flows, interlinkage of social movements and their organization beyond the borders, as well as ethnic and national consciousness maintained across state boundaries. Many of these sociological efforts presumed that these multiple types of mobilities, flows, and connections would continue to transcend borders, all the while keeping a critical stance against the accelerating flows.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, however, we have witnessed multiple crises that transformed the structural contexts for transnational processes and relations. They include the 9.11 terrorist attacks, the global financial crisis, natural and man-made disasters of enormous extent (earthquakes, volcano eruptions, hurricanes, nuclear accidents), some of which can be attributed to effects of global climate change, the global pandemic, and, most recently, full-scale war between major states. Each of these crises impacted human interaction and human flow across borders. In case of the COVID-19 pandemic, it even produced forced global immobility for more than a year. However, these developments did not necessarily undermine transnational social practices, but rather transformed the concrete forms and patterns of transnational activities, network, and consciousness.
Against this backdrop, JSS invites papers which address not only transnational social processes but also analyze the impact of these crises on their structuration. We welcome research not only on migrant transnationalism, but also on how wider social transnational processes such as transnational networks, organizations (corporations, NGOs, social movement, religious groups), or transnational consciousness, have been affected by these different crises.
- Eligibility requirements
For applicants from outside Japan:
To be eligible to apply as international applicant, the applicant must
- be currently living and working (or studying if the applicant is a graduate student) outside of Japan. Scholars living in Japan are NOT eligible to apply as international applicant;
- hold a master’s degree or higher obtained within the past 10 years as of April 1, 2023. (Time taken off for childcare and/or parental leave is not counted as part of these 10 years.) If there is no system to offer the master’s degree during the doctoral course, please send us a letter from your supervisor with their signature to state that your educational qualification is regarded to be equivalent to that of those who hold a master’s degree.
Although the competition is open to all early-career scholars who meet the eligibility requirements, preference will be given to early-career scholars from Asia (excluding Japan) and first-time applicants. However, scholars from any region, especially researchers who are at a relatively early stage of their career are encouraged to apply for the award.
International grant winners will be exempt from the annual conference fee as well as the JSS membership fee for the first year and will receive 100,000 yen to help cover the travel costs. All awardees are required to make a 15-minute presentation in English at the JSS annual meeting as part of one of the two sessions organized by the ILC.
* Please note that to receive the award, selected international scholars must be able and willing to submit the following two items:
- letter agreeing to participate in the conference,
- membership application for the JSS.
For applicants from within Japan:
To be eligible for support, the applicant must
- be currently living and working (or studying if the applicant is a graduate student) in Japan;
- hold a master’s degree or higher obtained within the past 10 years as of April 1, 2023. (. (Time taken off for childcare and/or parental leave is not counted as part of these 10 years.);
- be a member of the Japanese Sociological Society.
Grant winners from Japan will be exempt from the annual conference fee and will receive 20,000 Yen to help cover the travel costs. All awardees are required to make a 15-minute presentation in English at the JSS annual meeting as part of one of the sessions organized by the ILC.
- Applications:
An extended abstract (600 to 1,000 English words) should be submitted via the following form no later than May 31, 2023. Acceptance notes will be sent out by June 30, 2023. The extended abstract should include a clear description of research questions, theoretical framework, data, analytical methods, and main findings.
